The hijack: why your phone (and your teen's) is so hard to put down

A neuroscientist just spent an evening explaining exactly how social apps have been engineered to hijack our dopamine - and what it's doing to our teens' brains, sleep, focus and moods. Here's what stuck, and what we can actually do about it.

Last night I sat in a packed room for a lecture called 'The Hijack: What's Actually Happening When You Pick Up Your Phone,' delivered by neuroscientist Vivek Nauhbar (founder of Synaptic Flow, background in consumer psychology, BCG strategy and an MSc in Applied Neuroscience at King's College London). I went in slightly sceptical. I've heard the 'phones are bad' sermon before. I came out genuinely rattled, and thinking mostly about our teenagers.

Naubar's central claim: social media platforms are not neutral tools we're failing to use with willpower. They are engineered products, designed to exploit the brain's dopamine system, and 2012 will one day be looked back on as the 'big tobacco moment' for the industry: the years when we let unregulated, addictive products run wild through childhood before the science caught up.

How the platforms were built to hook us

The design history is no accident. Vine pioneered 6-second videos short enough to interest, too short to satisfy, engineered to loop. Snapchat added disappearing stories, forcing daily return before content vanished. TikTok's algorithm (originally Alex Zhu's) locked users into a perpetual scroll-hunt, never quite over. Instagram, YouTube and even LinkedIn copied short-form to stay competitive. A Los Angeles jury has already found Meta and YouTube liable for addicting and harming a young user, awarding $6M combined; both companies are appealing.

Dopamine: the hunting molecule, not the reward molecule

Most of us were taught dopamine = pleasure. It doesn't. Dopamine is a prediction molecule - it fires on anticipation, not on the reward itself. The classic experiments by Wolfram Schultz at Cambridge in 1997 showed that monkeys' dopamine spiked on the unexpected reward, and on the omission of an expected reward - not on the reward when it was expected. Think of a leopard hunting: the dopamine spike is on the footprint in the mud and the rustling in the bush, not on the kill. The kill itself releases serotonin, endorphins and anandamide (the 'bliss molecule' - the word comes from the Sanskrit anand).

Algorithms exploit exactly this. They serve 'near-miss' content (something likeable to you but not as good as the last thing you just liked, shared or commented on). Instead, the platforms hint at the next great video, keep you hunting and slip the ads in once you're locked in. Your primitive brain thinks it's stalking prey. It's actually being farmed.

What overuse does to a growing brain

Effortless dopamine floods the system. The brain, being sensible, defends itself by numbing its own receptors. After a long scroll, real-life stimuli - a cat, a sunrise, a conversation with your kid - genuinely don't register the way they should. Kids return to the phone to escape the dopamine crash, not because they're spoiled or lazy.

The good news: our brains recover

Vivek Naubar's suggests trying a practical experiment: on a 15-20 day trip - a family holiday, a hiking week, camp - go fully offline and watch what happens to the mental fog. He argued it's the closest most modern humans get to a factory reset. "Don't even take photos, just be present in the moment."

None of this makes me want to confiscate my kids' phones (they'd emigrate). But I did leave with a clearer story to tell them: your phone has been deliberately engineered to hijack your brain, a system that's still under construction until they're about 25.

What you can actually do

Protect the morning

Cortisol is at its highest on waking - biologically primed for deep work. Use that window for the hardest task of the day before opening any app, including WhatsApp and email. For teens, that means homework or revision before the phone, not after.

One 30-minute social window, not all-day grazing

Pick a slot, use it, close it. Avoid the Reels / For You / algorithmic feed entirely if you can - that's the slot machine.

Let them be bored

Forty-five to sixty minutes of doing nothing activates the brain's default mode network. Try it tomorrow: sit without phone, music or screen, and journal whatever comes up. Boredom is not the enemy of a growing brain - it's fertiliser.

Choose long-form over short-form

A 30-60 minute YouTube video or podcast is far less addictive than a scroll feed - the brain gets time to reconcile and actually learn, rather than being pinged.

Sports

Unpredictable, dopamine-rich, and they release BDNF, which drives neurogenesis and myelination. Twenty minutes of high-intensity movement is especially effective - and if your teen won't do it alone, do it with them.

Hydration

Two to three litres a day. Water conducts the brain's electricity and keeps sodium and potassium in balance. Dehydrated teens are foggy teens.
